You do not need to be a member to get enjoyment from Columbia Gadget Works and take part in many of our activities, but joining up certainly has its perks. In addition to the benefits listed below, you'll also get that warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from supporting our grateful organization. As an independent, non-profit hackerspace, we depend on our membership dues to keep the lights on and the solder flowing.

Membership Benefits

Currently, we can provide the following perks to dues-paying members that are not available to non-members.

  • 24×7 access to the space (plus those other hours)
  • Access to shop tools, electronics workbench, and other specialized equipment
  • Access to members who know how to use those tools (and can teach you!)
  • ULTIMATE POWER! …to vote on CGW issues in accordance with our by-laws
  • Opportunities to lead and guide the direction of our organization
  • Edit permissions on the wiki
  • Involvement in group projects
  • Access to the Microwave!
  • Involvement in the CGW community, including access to members-only chats and forums

Member Levels and Pricing

There is only one membership level in CGW. Each member gets one vote on the group decisions and all have equal access to the the hackerspace facilities. We do have board members that are in charge of various aspects of the organization, but those positions are really more toil than entitlement.

Membership in CGW costs $40 per month. Every dollar of this goes toward the continuing operation and projects of the group in the effort to make us all better hackers.

How to Join

Joining CGW is easy! The best way to get started is to drop by the space during our weekly Open Hack Night. Other CGW members will be there to introduce you to our space and our organization. You can find more information about new member requirements in our Ground Rules.

If you are unable to attend one of our scheduled events, contact us and we will try to arrange a time for you to visit. Please understand, though, that our organization is run entirely by volunteers, and we may not be able to accommodate everyone's schedule.
